Summary: Here are Pros and Cons:
Pros:
- Room rate is super excellent relative to the area.
- Lady Manager spoke excellent English.
- Both owner and manager were really fun to speak and explain the neighborhood.
- Room was old but clean, and room lock works.
- You can block 1 hour of private Onsen time alone for each room from 3 different Onsen. This is huge plus.
- 10-15 min from the train station. Plenty of food options near by.
Cons:
- Building is really super old. My floor had a slight angle.
- Futon was pretty thin for the Japanese standard.
- Shared toilet for men and women was inconvenient.
- Onsen pump (centrally located in this property) which was noisy until 11:00pm and from 5:00am.
Everything else is considered, I would go back to this old house minshuku / ryokan because I had a such fun with owner and manager. I did put my ear plugs in at night. I may bring my own additional camping mat with me next time.

Summary: Great, affordable onsen/ryokan experience, especially for those looking for something less formal & more private. They offer 3 different private baths that you can easily self-reserve via a timeslot board. Bathrooms & refrigerator are shared. Complimentary coffee. The girl who checked me in was perfectly fluent in english (& japanese).

Summary: This was a perfect hotel for me. As an international traveler, unfamiliar with possibly fancy Ryokan customs, this inn had a very welcoming and relaxed feel. My name on the board at the entrance upon check-in was a lovely touch. Several of the staff were bilingual, which I definitely don't take for granted, and extremely helpful, and went out of their way to answer lots of questions. The reservation system for the baths was genius and simple. Being a bit older, less able to tolerate very hot water for long periods, and a bit self conscious, I really appreciated the opportunity to take private baths. I tried all of the three baths over the two night stay. The rock bath was very beautiful, but my favorite was the outdoor bath, especially with cool air temperatures at 6am. With older bones, I doubled up the futon. Carefully opening the window screen, I could even see the sea from my room, and ditched my day 1 sightseeing plans in favor of a day at the beach - in Nov! All in all, a really wonderful way to wind down my action packed trip in Japan. Thank you Kagaya and staff!
