Positive: The setting is the hotel's strongest asset. We were fortunate enough to enjoy a string of beautiful days without the summer crowds, and the walks around the lake and through the surrounding woods proved both restorative and genuinely scenic — the riverside at sunset is particularly captivating. The staff, throughout our stay, were unfailingly courteous and attentive. The property has an unmistakably old-fashioned character: the imposing wooden furniture lends the whole building a period atmosphere that one will either appreciate as authentic heritage or find dated. It is, in any case, a hotel with a tradition. Contrary to what several other reviewers complained about, the ongoing renovation works were entirely unobtrusive during our stay. Worth noting: while the on-site parking costs €9 per night, there is a completely free public car park immediately adjacent to the hotel. The rooms are generously sized, and those facing the lake offer a truly memorable view. On the dining side, service at the hotel restaurant is prompt, the dishes are well executed, and a children's menu is available. The wellness area is excellent. The pool is spacious, kept at a pleasantly mild temperature, and lined with comfortable loungers; it adjoins a terrace overlooking the lake, with a sauna and relaxation room rounding out the experience. The hotel also sits a two-minute walk from a water park, though it was still closed at the end of April — and I suspect the whole area gets considerably busier in peak summer.

Negative: The bathroom was a clear letdown — cramped and narrow, with a small bathtub doubling as a shower. The shower itself was easily the most uncomfortable feature of the stay: a short hose, a showerhead that refused to deliver a proper stream regardless of adjustment, and water temperature that swung erratically between scalding and freezing. Bathing our children was particularly awkward, as I had to step in with them to manage the temperature and assist them. The restaurant, while solid in execution, left us puzzled on two counts. First, the same menu appeared to be on display every evening, which gave us the impression it does not rotate — something that would quickly become tedious for anyone staying multiple nights (and the buffet, notably, was not mentioned anywhere on it). Second, on Friday 1st May (a public holiday in Germany), the restaurant switched to a buffet format at €36 per person — a change that was nowhere advertised in advance and, more importantly, was not flagged when we booked our dinner table. Whether the buffet runs every Friday or was a one-off arrangement tied to the holiday, the lack of upfront communication is the real issue: guests should be told what to expect, and at what price, before they sit down.
