Travel Purpose: leisure

Positive: Location was very close to the Hakone-Yumoto station (down one street and across a small bridge). Staff was welcoming and friendly upon arrival. Oriented me to the ryokan (traditional inn), including all the hot springs/baths, times for use for women, breakfast and dinner times, and how it operates in terms of bed set up and break down. The on-site hot springs/baths were wonderful. There is a sign on how to use the baths, if you're unfamiliar with the process. The open air bath was my favorite, which allowed me to cool my head while soaking in the hot springs. Best part is the food. Breakfast at 0800 and dinner at 1800 are served in kaiseki style (traditional multi-course Japanese cuisine with seasonal ingredients). The quality and taste, amazing. The variety of food served, amazing. The quantity, also abundant. Alcohol and coffee cost extra, which is settled up at the end of your stay. I chose this ryokan because I read rave reviews about the food, and it did not disappoint. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

Negative: Nothing that I didn't like, since neither of the following affected me. I only saw stairs, so I highly recommend traveling with small luggage only. Getting upstairs with large suitcases would be difficult. Also, stairs to go down for dining, so if accessibility is a concern, there is that. There is a curfew for the inn. Doors are locked at 2200, so you have to let the staff know if you're going to be out past that time. I was always back by dinner time at 1800. Not to mention, I think most of the shops closed relatively early anyway, since it's a smaller town. However, for those who like to wander late at night, it's something to consider.
